As artificial intelligence (AI) platforms and applications continue to expand at an unprecedented rate, a wide range of new and revamped roles reflecting AI’s value is emerging; each of these roles is integral to the advancement and ethical application of AI technology.

Within various departments, professionals work diligently to innovate, develop, and maintain AI systems, ensuring their efficacy and alignment with ethical standards. Below, I explore the current spectrum of job profiles, delineating their functions and contributions — as well as the departments with which they typically align — across distinct departments within the AI realm. The breadth and scope of these roles speaks to the career opportunities that exist and the skills needed to maintain or secure employment in the AI era.

The list below is, of course, evolving quickly. 

AI Researcher/Scientist

In the department of Core AI Research, AI Researchers and Scientists operate at the forefront of innovation, exploring novel algorithms and methodologies to push the boundaries of AI capabilities. By collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, they drive experimentation, testing, and documentation of cutting-edge AI advancements. 

Machine Learning Engineer

Operating within the realm of AI Development, Machine Learning Engineers craft and optimize ML models. Their expertise spans problem definition, data preprocessing, model selection, training, and deployment, crucially contributing to operationalizing AI algorithms.

AI Software Developer

Nurturing the development of AI-powered applications, AI Software Developers operate within the AI Application Development department. They architect and integrate AI algorithms seamlessly into software applications, optimizing code for efficiency and performance. 

AI Systems Architect

In the domain of AI Infrastructure and Architecture, AI Systems Architects design cohesive frameworks to underpin AI systems. From infrastructure setup to model deployment, they orchestrate the components that are essential for robust AI operations. 

AI Product Manager

Guiding the strategic direction of AI-powered products, AI Product Managers generally sit within the Product Management department. They delineate product strategies, prioritize features, and oversee the development lifecycle, ensuring alignment with market needs and organizational objectives. 

AI Project Manager

AI Quality Assurance Engineer

Ensuring the reliability and performance of AI systems, AI Quality Assurance Engineers operate within the Quality Assurance department. They conduct rigorous testing, automate processes, and uphold quality standards to maintain the integrity of AI software. 

AI Infrastructure Engineer

Interacting with AI applications to perform tasks and provide feedback, AI End Users are organizationally tied to the End-User Engagement function. Their work fuels iterative improvements, driving the evolution and refinement of AI solutions.
