In episode 64 of the Data Modernization Minute, Wayne Sadin explores how public reports allow CIOs to delve into data lineage, opening the door for data modernization initiatives such as automation.

This episode is sponsored by Acceleration Economy’s Digital CIO Summit, taking place April 4-6. Register for the free event here. Tune in to the event to hear from CIO practitioners discuss their modernization and growth strategies.

Highlights

00:45 — A new CIO coming into a new company is wondering where to start. Wayne suggests starting by asking for public reporting as well as reports that are given to the CEO or board of directors.

01:29 — Take the reports and look at every single element in those reports. Ask yourself questions like: What table do they come from? What query was used to generate that? Then work your way back in what’s called a data lineage.

02:02 — By doing this, you learn what’s important to the company. If you find any places with discrepancies, problems, or manual processes, you can tackle them quickly and get some quick wins through procedures like automation.

02:32 —Through this process, you can learn where all the company’s systems, databases, decision-support tools, Excel spreadsheets, and low-code systems are.

03:07 — You can work with the data people or information technology (IT) team to take the data apart, going all the way back to the “person who keyed it in.” This process is also a great way to find technical debt.

03:51 — “If management isn’t frightened at the end of this process, either they’re very new, they’re very good — or you missed something,” says Wayne.
