In episode 114 of the Leadership Minute, I share some of the major announcements made at the recent OpenAI conference for developers.
Highlights
19 — Earlier this week, OpenAI had its first developer conference, and it was a really impressive one. Let me tell you about a few of the key announcements.
00 — It’s got a new model called GPT-4 Turbo. This is an improved model with a larger context window and an updated knowledge base. It also announced custom GPTs. In the past, ChatGPT has been very broad.
22 — These custom GPTs already been pre-trained in a particular area. You could use a custom GPT for your own company and have it be more knowledgeable about your own industry data, or it can already have this mindset of “I’m an expert code programmer” or “I am an expert event planner.” That way you don’t have to start with building it up with information and then go from there.
00 — OpenAI also announced a GPT store where you’ll be able to get new GPTs that other users have created. It also announced several application programming interfaces (APIs). There’s going to be an assistance API, which allows developers to craft personalized AI agents. The Dall-E 3 API to create images in your own applications. And, finally, an audio API is going to introduce a new text-to-speech API with preset voices.
49 — The other really neat thing is a multi-modal capability. In the past, Chat-GPT was set up in such a way that you had to decide what you were going to do with it and pick that model. Now, they’ve combined it all into one chat experience where you don’t have to decide which one you’re going to use. It just picks whichever one is needed at the time.
46 — This developer conference and the announcements emphasize the strategic relationship between Microsoft and OpenAI. They have a co-opetition thing going which will ultimately be a really good thing for us as consumers of that technology.
43 — OpenAI’s developer conference stresses how devoted it is to the developer community. There are already several million developers using its APIs. It also announced there are 100 million active users per week using Chat-GPT.
10 — I hope that chief information officers (CIOs) will take a pronged approach to artificial intelligence (AI). There are going to be ways that you can revolutionize your whole company by doing major AI projects. They could take a long time and cost a lot of money. But in the meantime, there are already tools that could allow you to begin taking advantage of AI for your companies, without having to wait.
