In episode 15 of the Cutting Edge Podcast, Leonard Lee discusses private cellular networks and what they mean within the world of edge computing.

Highlights

00:40 — Private cellular networks have been around for a long time. Much of today’s excitement around them relates to 5G, which brings a whole new level of wireless connectivity. Leonard says it is inevitable that private cellular networks will soon be compared to Wi-Fi.

01:44 — Each wireless technology has a role in enterprise and industrial environments based on unique merits, benefits, and limitations. Private cellular networks can be deployed using “licensed, shared, or unlicensed spectrum depending on the market or regulatory environment,” says Leonard.

03:12 — In relation to edge computing, private cellular networks give an advantage to edge computing architectures and designs; they create better coverage for edge infrastructures and support more internet of things (IoT) connections.

Key Takeaways for the C-suite

05:24 — It’s important for the C-suite to recognize that there are opportunities to leverage private cellular networks to enhance wireless edge computing applications.

05:58 — 5G technology is still evolving, so it may take C-suite executives time to commercialize some of the features.

06:28 — While the differentiation and value of private cellular networks may seem low at the moment, Leonard suggests there is no question that they will get better.
