Each month, Tony Uphoff, visionary CEO of Thomasnet.com, joins Cloud Wars Live for a recurring segment. “Uphoff on Industry” will explore the innovations, upheavals, and breakthroughs reshaping the the world of manufacturing and industrial markets. Join Tony and me as we discuss disruptive new trends in the digital-industrial world. Today, we talk technology and media’s role in the monetization of rage—and how companies should respond in this moment.

Episode 15

In this episode: Tony starts off with Facebook and the monetization of rage that we’re all seeing on social platforms. As veterans of the tech and media industries, Tony and I reflect on how profoundly both have changed over the last several decades. In the sixties, we had a print-based world and a television-based world – and that’s it.

Today, Facebook and other media companies have changed those dynamics. Are they simply chronicling upheaval, or are they causing it? Tony quotes Crosby Stills Nash and Young: “Something’s happening here.” I say, “What it is ain’t exactly clear.” These young people are going to grow up with a set of expectations – and some of the more seasoned folks think it’s almost an instant disruption.

We conclude with Tony saying that it’s a time for listening. A time for us all to try to understand what is happening and don’t be too quick to volunteer opinions, “sloganeer,” or make public proclamations.

Also in this episode:

  • Employees are saying, “I’m good thanks – I’ll stay right at home”
  • Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella: two years of transformation crammed into two months
  • Everyone in the world is paying attention to Zoom
  • Email is the Rodney Dangerfield of digital platforms

Highlights

'Change is afoot and, as usual, technology is in the middle of it.' #CloudWars Click To Tweet 'Every year we're like, I can't believe I still use email… And every year email just very patiently grows between 5 and 10% in terms of usage. We tend to underestimate the efficiency of what email really does for us.' #CloudWars Click To Tweet 'This is a personal opinion, but it's backed by a lot of years of professional experience: I think this is a time for individual management and individual responsibility as opposed to public proclamations.' #CloudWars Click To Tweet
