The cloud market is very crowded, but the Cloud Wars Top 10 has shown that there a few that stand above the rest. And for Amazon Web Services, Q4 of 2021 was a reason to celebrate the monumental task of not only standing out but overtaking Microsoft in cloud growth.

So, what did AWS do over the past few months to gain ground?

Cloud it be the arrival of new CEO Adam Selipsky back in May ’21? Could Microsoft be resting on the laurels of its success?

In this Acceleration Economy “Lightning Strike”, John Siefert, Bob Evans, and Aaron Back dive into the analysis:

  • In spite of mixed messages, how did AWS achieve this growth?
  • Did the AWS hiring frenzy play a major role?
  • Who did AWS land in Q4 to feed into the stellar numbers?

Highlights

01:01 – Nobody thought that anyone could catch up to Microsoft. But AWS jumped ahead by growing 25% faster than Microsoft.

02:00 – The phenomenal growth happened in spite of a few factors such as Selipsky stating that customers should stick with AWS rather than look for multi-cloud solutions.

03:37 – AWS made strategic investments in its infrastructure and people. They added sales and marketing resources which is paying off.

04:28 – The arms race to build global data centers meant that AWS, Microsoft, Google, and Oracle built out their teams at a record pace. For example, in the second half of 2021, Amazon hired about 273,000 people.

06:05 – AWS delivers up hundreds of services for developers and users but doesn’t release financial details about the AWS revenue in any meaningful way.

07:15 – Many analysts are looking for some sort of transparency on the revenue details, but Amazon doesn’t give it out. However, the high-level numbers showed AWS growth accelerated four straight quarters versus Microsoft.

09:12 – Does this mean Amazon’s going to take over the number one spot in the Cloud Wars Top 10?
