Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily news and commentary show, hosted by Cloud Wars Founder Bob Evans. Each episode provides insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the Cloud.

This episode is sponsored by Acceleration Economy’s Digital CIO Summit, taking place April 4-6. Register for the free event here. Tune in to the event to hear from CIO practitioners discuss their modernization and growth strategies.

In this Cloud Wars Minute, Bob Evans details co-creation efforts between IBM and the Cleveland Clinic, who are joining forces to target deadly diseases using quantum computing.

Highlights

00:35 — One of the things Bob loves about the tech industry is that it never fails to surprise — and oftentimes, delight. When one sees IBM and the Cleveland Clinic team up to target deadly diseases with quantum computing, it gives a sense of the incredible promise and potential that technology has.

01:14 — This is a strong — and perhaps the first — example of quantum computing being used outside of “running tests or early-stage pilots.” There is actually a quantum computer on-site at the Cleveland Clinic. With the IBM quantum computing system that is being installed at the Cleveland Clinic, medical professionals will have the ability to target specific proteins in disease research, cardiovascular risks, and “just entirely new types of research and explorations,” and Bob’s favorite, “with Alzheimer’s, using genomic sequencing analytics to try to uncover new cures.”

02:13 — The CEO of the Cleveland Clinic said that “we’re using the quantum computing with IBM to explore new treatments for cancer, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and other methods.” Using the power of quantum computing, the Cleveland Clinic is searching for “new ways of doing things.” This serves as a “superb” example of co-creation, says Bob.

03:02 — Bob explains that there have been whispers of “practical applications of quantum computing” in late 2023. The co-creation between IBM and the Cleveland Clinic is happening in early 2023.

03:21 — In this example, quantum computing services are not being delivered through the cloud, which Bob believes will be the way that most folks tap into the power of quantum. This news is part of a 10-year deal between IBM and the Cleveland Clinic and is a “huge step forward for what they are doing.”

04:02 — Quantum computing is going to give, in this case, the Cleveland Clinic the power to attack problems that are beyond the power of today’s biggest and most capable supercomputers, says Bob. Instead, it is going to unleash an exciting and interesting new realm of experimentation, innovation, and achievement.
