Highlights
00:27 — Emerging technologies that haven’t gained widespread adoption yet are usually scrutinized most for their performance. In the earliest days of computers, people didn’t decide based on factors like cost, size, convenience, or reliability; the people and places using computers needed them for specialized applications.
01:11 — As technologies develop and move into consumer markets, these factors become more prevalent. Clayton Christensen talks about this in his books “The Innovators Dilemma” and “The Innovators Solution.” This is starting to happen now with AI, as the focus moves away from demonstrating the pure capability and performance of AI systems and moving toward factors such as safety, speed, convenience, cost, and accessibility.
01:51 — Toni speculates that this could be why ChatGPT was so successful. “It didn’t have anything to do with performance; it was just a better product because non-technical people could use it and it really valued accessibility and convenience above all,” he explains. Organizations looking to build AI into operations should consider the real competitive advantage of these other factors beyond just performance.
02:20 — One of the most important — if not the most important — factors that organizations need to consider is trust, Toni argues.

03:01 — As more parts of businesses become automated, people will start choosing providers and working with companies that value trust over performance in their AI systems. There aren’t many firms that are focusing heavily on areas like bias mitigation, safety, and ethical development — all of which can increase trust in your system.
03:28 — Toni encourages business by saying that now is the time to “step in and gain those competitive advantages and lead the industry forward in its focus on trust.” Working with the Acceleration Economy AI/Hyperautomation Top 10 companies is a great way to achieve this, as they have experience in ethical development and bias mitigation, for instance.
