In episode 116 of the AI/Hyperautomation Minute, Aaron Back reviews his top highlights from the 2023 State of Data and AI report by Databricks.

Highlights

00:37 — Databricks, an Acceleration Economy Data Modernization Top 10 Company, released its 2023 State of Data and AI report. Additionally, Databricks has its Data and AI Summit at the end of this month. Aaron shares some of his top highlights from this report.

01:14 — The number of companies using SaaS, LLMs, and APIs — which are used for accessing services like ChatGPT — has grown by 1,310% between the end of November 2022 and the beginning of May 2023.

02:03 — Microsoft‘s Power BI solution is the most popular data and AI product of 2023.

02:34 — 61% of customers migrating to the Databricks Lakehouse are coming from on-prem and cloud data warehouses. Aaron explains that these customers are “looking to consolidate that even more into the lakehouse solution from Databricks.”

02:50 — The fastest-growing data and AI products include dbt, Fivetran, Informatica, and Qlik. As the explosive growth of AI continues, Aaron says, “It’s not slowing down anytime soon.” Companies are flocking to these tools to try to understand what they can do with them.

03:43 — “The landscape of companies creating AI solutions is just exploding as well,” Aaron notes. He emphasizes a few important areas that companies must keep in mind.

03:55 — Firstly, governance and frameworks around any AI effort are vital. “The AI output is only as good as the data that it’s using,” Aaron says.

04:33 — Cybersecurity is another necessity when using AI, as “you can’t have all these isolated little AI things running around your ecosystem and not have security wrapped around it.” Aaron also encourages thinking about how AI can be used as a competitive weapon against cyber threats.

05:05 — Aaron asks, “How are you managing your multi-cloud environments as they continue to sprawl?” The breadth of tools continues to grow as more unique solutions are developed for filling in industry gaps or gaps within companies.

05:40 — All of these reasons exemplify the importance of keeping people involved. Aaron emphasizes that it’s “people + technology” — keeping people at the beginning on purpose.
