In episode 111 of the AI/Hyperautomation Minute, Toni Witt discusses the partnership between Zoom and Anthropic and the importance of carefully selecting a partner in terms of ethical and responsible AI.

This episode is sponsored by “Selling to the New Executive Buying Committee,” an Acceleration Economy Course designed to help vendors, partners, and buyers understand the shifting sands of how mid-market and enterprise CXOs are making purchase decisions to modernize technology.

Highlights

00:36 — Zoom recently announced its partnership with Anthropic, an AI development company and app provider.

00:50 — Zoom is using its own technology that the company developed in-house as well as other providers. “Mixing and matching is also a good idea to match customers’ needs to the right technology,” Toni explains, as relying on a single provider can also bring inherent risk.

01:14 — With this announcement, Toni raises the important topic of selecting the right AI provider. Although OpenAI has taken the most market share, it has taken “more of a commercial route,” as it has “placed less focus on AI safety” as well as ethical and responsible AI compared to Anthropic.

01:52 — Anthropic has placed much emphasis on embedding its research results directly into its products. Because of this, Toni suggests that Anthropic may be a better choice compared to using models from OpenAI.

02:09 — Mechanistic interpretability is the first example, which Toni refers to as basic explainability. It involves understanding how AI models behave and how they reach an outcome, for instance.

02:41 — The company also wants to shift from an outcome-oriented approach to a process approach. Toni describes the black box problem, which raises the need for explainability. “We have to focus more on the actual process of how these AI models come to decisions,” he says, as Anthropic is doing much work in that area.

03:38 — Additionally, Anthropic is studying emergent and conscious behavior, “but doing so with smaller models and more contained environments so that they can understand how those behaviors might present themselves in larger, more powerful models.”

04:02 — AI will “keep disrupting more industries,” explains Toni. While disruption sounds nice for businesses, rapid disruption can cause problems for society at large. This is why the work Anthropic is doing is so important, as it provides an understanding of how the implications of AI impact society.

04:26 —Toni advises to “carefully consider which provider you’re actually using, especially for your base model.” He notes that it’s important to consider how providers are going about AI safety as well as ethical and responsible AI development.
