In episode 108 of the Leadership Minute, Scott Vaughan discusses practical generative AI use cases that he’s come across, their real-world impact and how to get the most from the technology.

Highlights

00:29 — Business leaders have to process a couple of opposing, and extreme, views of generative AI: that it’s going to change everything and it’s crushing jobs and our ability to think. As with any breakthrough technology, the truth is probably somewhat between the two extremes; the winners will be those who apply it in impactful ways.

01:05 — Generative AI copilots, not like Siri or Alexa but software used for business, are emerging. Copilots are integrated into everyday business applications. Based on experience working with about half a dozen tools, users have to become really good at three things:

  1. Understand the language models in use
  2. Understand how to prompt your language model — become a ‘prompt engineer’ to get the most out of it
  3. Input the right types of data, then check and validate the data

01:59 — Once you do those things, the productivity gains are crazy; you can be blown away. The more you work with it, the better outputs you get.

02:17 — One way to approach the copilot concept is to think about adding value rather than creating every idea from scratch. You might consider getting a first draft and then looking for ways to improve it, whether imagery, design, or content.

03:08 — If you use generative AI as a copilot to ride alongside you, to focus on mundane tasks, it doesn’t replace critical thinking. But it sure does accelerate what you’re thinking about.
