June’s live Cloud Wars Expo event featured dozens of industry leaders allowing the Acceleration Economy team access to the inner workings of the greatest growth market the world has ever known.
If you missed the Expo or just want to catch up on sessions you were not able to attend, then you’re in luck. We recorded more than 40 hours of education sessions from the event, which are available for free to Acceleration Economy subscribers. We’re also previewing the content in this series of Moments, which feature highlights from each session.
In this Cloud Wars Expo Moment, Peter Guagenti, Chief Marketing Officer of Cockroach Labs, explains the concept of distributed SQL and defines the role that Cockroach Labs has within the arena of “new SQL.”
Highlights
00:23 — Guagenti classifies distributed SQL as an “interesting animal” and frames Cockroach Labs within its context in order to demonstrate where the organization sits in the ecosystem.
00:34 — The promise of the cloud was “interesting” as it guaranteed a level of scale, efficiency, and elasticity. Cockroach Labs made wholesale changes across programming languages and how they developed and deployed software, but the thing that remained the same was the database.
01:06 — Cockroach Labs’ founders were all ex-Google employees who had the epiphany that Google was so successful because they were the first cloud company, and the system was built on containerized infrastructure. The founders realized their strength came from their ability to write software that made everything else running on it faster and more effective.
02:04 — Legacy databases provide users with challenges, most notably involving scale. Guagenti says that the database that Cockroach Labs built was “built for today” and that resiliency is a key element of “trying to keep things alive through cloud scale.”
