In Episode 31 of the Data Modernization Minute, Wayne discusses the “front side of data” and explores the factors driving the need for more data.

Highlights

00:58 — Wayne explains that while he was in the utility industry working as a CIO, his organization went by smart meters, which measure electricity consumption every 15 minutes. Smart meters allow the utility to understand your profile in order to permit things such as time of day pricing and demand response.

01:21 — Wayne’s former organization was collecting data once a month when he was made aware of having to implement smart meters across the entire fleet of meters over the next three years. This totaled 2,976 meters per year, which drove his data meter volume up by nearly 3,000 times.

02:18 — The company didn’t increase its information technology (IT) budget by 3,000 times. Instead, the company purchased advanced software to compress and efficiently manage its data. In the real world, data increases are rising by extreme amounts.

02:41 — Data matters, and it is imperative that it is collected and that IT departments are met with the right tools, techniques, and processes. Data increases need to be dealt with as a business and technology architecture.
