In Episode 123 of My Metaverse Minute, Kieron talks about remote workers’ concerns over workplace surveillance and the balancing act employers must perform between monitoring employee activities and allowing room for employee autonomy.

Highlights

00:00 — A recent survey revealed that 63% of employees are concerned about employers taking data from them while they work in a Metaverse setting.

00:55 — Of the 2,500 people surveyed, 51% reported fears over employers collecting their private location data and 50% expressed concerns regarding real-time screen-watching.

01:10 — Where is the balance between addressing valid privacy concerns and allowing employers access to data for their remote employees? Many employees are spending more time online just to be present, even if it doesn’t lead to productivity.

02:06 — Metaverse data security is still evolving. While employers need access to some employee activity data, too much access causes employees stress, being unable to take breaks throughout the day fearing constant surveillance.

02:50 — Before launching into Metaverse workspaces, employers should take care to create airtight legal contracts detailing how much data/surveillance is considered appropriate for remote work. Being upfront about the degree of surveillance can get employers out in front of the issue before it worsens.
