00:06 — Machester City Football Club, a major club in the English Premier League, has announced that it will be building the first football stadium within the Metaverse with the help of Sony.
00:21 — The stadium promises to be colossal—far, far bigger than their existing Etihad stadium located in the real world. More fans will be able to see live football matches as well as contribute to the team’s success. While this is a great step forward, is it too soon?
00:41 — Let’s make a comparison: If you go to a live concert, you will see someone performing on a stage. Your focus is entirely on that person—it’s on their music and what they’re doing in their performance.
00:53 — A football match is very different. The factors that really make the experience are the other football fans, the atmosphere within the football stalls that the game its guts. These are reasons why people physically go to football games rather than watch them on television.
01:18 — This might be too soon in the Metaverse, as there isn’t yet the ability to replicate the atmosphere that encapsulates the full experience. Should we think of ways to replicate that atmosphere before introducing something like this?
01:37 — There are some ways that these experiences can be achieved, such as having greater interaction with other football fans. Using mixed reality can be used for fans to stand up or embrace a fellow fan when your team scores a goal. Another idea could be mapping certain facial features to express emotions in the Metaverse.
02:03 — Taking fan interactions a step further, the football atmosphere could be developed by enabling fans to do things in the virtual stadium that they can’t do in real life. For example, fans could have the ability to fly through the stadium in the middle of the game or zigzag between players on the pitch. Is this a possibility? These considerations need to be taken into account because these interactions aren’t available yet.
