00:05 — Samsung is leading the way in many respects. It’s been Decentraland before, and it’s Decentraland again.
00:20 — Samsung debuted its Galaxy S22 smartphone at a Metaverse event held on Decentraland. This is quite a big step forward for the company which would usually do this in a live setting.
00:30 — There still were a few technical difficulties, but all in all, over 100,000 users attended the event. Interestingly, it was essentially a success. Samsung had a focus on sustainability as part of the event structure. On entering the space, a hologram asked users to find and collect five discarded cardboard boxes to receive a gift.
00:53 — The gift turns out to be a seed that is planted in Samsung’s virtual forest to highlight the company’s commitment to sustainability.
01:01 — Now, I felt like this opened up a discussion about sustainability and the Metaverse. Could the Metaverse be a vessel for more sustainable practices? For example, an event like the Samsung unboxing would usually have been held in a glitzy hall, and it’s very much an unsustainable event. But if more events like this could be held on the Metaverse, could this be a way for businesses to offset their carbon and become more environmentally friendly?
