In episode 46 of the Data Modernization Minute, Wayne Sadin shares his take on a book that he recently read that explores a new perspective on how artificial intelligence might exist in the future.

This episode is sponsored by Acceleration Economy’s Digital CIO Summit, taking place April 4-6. Register for the free event here. Tune in to the event to hear from CIO practitioners discuss their modernization and growth strategies.

Highlights

00:48 — Many people are “focused on the idea of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and what may be an inflection point in AI being used in our daily lives.” Wayne has found that, when trying to understand the implications of disruptive technology, a great place to turn is science fiction.

01:13 — Wayne shares his “book report” after reading the book “First Light of Day: A Cautionary Tale of Our Future” by Michael Steep, the founder and director of Stanford University’s Disruptive Technology and Digital Cities program.

01:34 — Wayne explains that the book talks about a near future, 25 years from now and primarily in Europe, where they are at the precipice of creating an AI that may very well be sentient. He elaborates that the book questions philosophy, legal structures, business issues, and philosophical implications in the minds of various characters each of whom wants to use the new AI tied to quantum computing. The book also questions the power that can be released from that, which can potentially change the world.

02:17 — While the book explores these concepts, it doesn’t tell readers how to build this AI. Although it doesn’t tell readers how to use generative AI “tomorrow,” it does provide a fresh perspective on how AI might be shaping the future through the way the characters live in a different world filled with AI. Wayne notes that intelligent agents are part of the daily lives of the characters.

02:43 — If you want to read about a new idea of how some think about digital cities and AI, Wayne recommends this book. In addition to the book, Wayne also gained insights by reviewing the footnotes and references to see a variety of future developments and uses of AI.
