In episode 73 of the Data Modernization Minute, Wayne Sadin takes a look at what goes into a project management office (PMO).
Highlights
00:36 — Wayne believes there are three functions to a PMO. The first one is demand management, which is taking a look at what’s coming into the department. The work coming in should have a sponsor who is the business owner of that project and a quick business case (about one page).

01:13 — Then comes program or portfolio management. Program management is how one fits all the parts together. It’s very easy to manage one project, but it’s very hard to manage 20 projects, especially when they all interrelate. Then, lastly, there’s the part that everybody thinks is the PMO’s main job: project management. That’s the discipline of understanding risk, time, cost, resources, and change management.
02:15 — As a side note, Wayne disdains the idea of information technology (IT) projects within most corporations. He prefers to refer to them as business projects with an IT component.
03:08 — Build a PMO, and there will be successful project creation in even the most complex organizations.
