In episode 110 of the AI/Hyperautomation Minute, Toni Witt contextualizes prompt engineering skills in the labor market and how they’re relevant to organizations.

This episode is sponsored by Acceleration Economy’s Generative AI Digital Summit. View the event, which features practitioner and platform insights on how solutions such as ChatGPT will impact the future of work, customer experience, data strategy, cybersecurity, and more, by registering for your free on-demand pass.

Highlights

00:32 — Prompt engineering is “the art and science of giving the right prompts to models to get the outputs that you actually want,” Toni says.

01:05 — Although he uses generative AI tools almost every day on a personal level, Toni says he still doesn’t consider himself to be a prompt engineer. “When I’m using these tools, I don’t even think about prompting itself, I kind of just dive in,” he explains.

01:22 — This illustrates a reality for most people. “Prompt engineering is not going to make or break your career and you’re not going to see a huge amount of specialized prompt engineers in the future taking the jobs of programmers, engineers, or others,” Toni says. Rather, it will become a skill that everyone will have, such as being able to conduct a Google search.

01:52 — There will be roles like “10x prompt engineers” who will be paid specifically for prompt engineering. Toni suggests that those people will be skilled at using AI tools in general.

02:09 — For companies right now, AI replacing technologies is not a threat — people just need to be aware of this new skill set that’s emerging.
