In episode 95 of the AI/Hyperautomation Minute, Toni Witt discusses the recent announcement from OpenAI about adding plugins to ChatGPT.

This episode is sponsored by Acceleration Economy’s Digital CIO Summit, taking place April 4-6. Register for the free event here. Tune in to the event to hear from CIO practitioners discuss their modernization and growth strategies.

Highlights

00:26 — OpenAI recently announced that plugins will be added to ChatGPT. For instance, one is a web browsing plugin. This enables ChatGPT to access real-time information that’s pulled from the web by using Bing Web Search API.

00:52 — Since the training data of ChatGPT only went up to 2021, the output would only be able to provide information through that year. Now, this plugin will not only pull information in real-time but it will also cite the sources that it used.

01:38 — The downside to this is that live results pulled from the web are less filtered than the static training data it was using previously. This can lead to the spread of more incorrect or biased information.

02:07 — Many organizations have already started building plugins for ChatGPT. For instance, Expedia, a travel management company, built a plugin to build an itinerary for users’ trips and more easily discover options for plane tickets, hotel prices, and more — and in real-time.

02:51 — Additionally, OpenAI announced a retrieval plugin that lets ChatGPT search through files, emails, and general documents to produce answers with information that’s pulled from those sources.

03:03 — One application of this is technical documentation. Toni shares an example of his friend who runs a startup that helps developers understand technical documentation for products. Toni suggested that he build a chat tool that helps developers by answering their questions as they work on projects and produces personalized answers based on their projects.

03:50 — “I think this is really a paradigm shift for any kind of SaaS company, for any tech company in general,” Toni suggests. Stripe built a similar tool using GPT-4 that enables anyone in its developer community to ask questions about Stripe and how to use it.

04:25 — These plugins are “leading to an explosion of value creation,” Toni explains. He reports his excitement for how more companies will build their plugins for ChatGPT that will add value to their products for their customers.
