Welcome to the AI Ecosystem Report, featuring practitioner analyst and entrepreneur Toni Witt. This series is intended to deliver the timely intelligence about artificial intelligence (AI) you need to get up to speed for an upcoming client engagement or board meeting.

Highlights

Innovation (00:43)

UK-based media outlet Financial Times struck a deal with OpenAI to bring its copyrighted content into ChatGTP responses legally. This means users will be able to receive summaries and quotes from articles on the Financial Times website as well as direct links to those articles.

OpenAI is also securing licensing deals with other major news sources. The company wants ChatGPT to be able to produce quality responses and understands the value of reputation in the world of information. By providing outputs from credible media outlets, ChatGPT will become a more valuable asset to end users. However, it must ensure that it’s not crossing infringement boundaries by not using copyrighted material in training without attribution or payment.

The AI Ecosystem Q1 2024 Report compiles the innovations, funding, and products highlighted in AI Ecosystem Reports from the first quarter of 2024. Download now for perspectives on the companies, investments, innovations, and solutions shaping the future of AI.

Funding (03:27)

Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, announced a $6 billion raise from a series of investors. This series B round of funding will be used to take its first products to market and accelerate its research. In April 2024, xAI released Grok 1.6, which is a multi-modal model with vision capability. It also offers an integrated development environment (IDE) for prompt engineering.

According to its website, xAI’s primary focus is on the development of advanced AI systems that are truthful, competent, and maximally beneficial for humanity. The company’s mission is to understand the true nature of the universe. There’s a high level of ambition.

Solution of the Week (06:00)

TikTok is building GenAI into its ads business in various ways, fleshing out the platform and toolset that it has provided advertisers. The social media platform recently announced TikTok Symphony AI Suite for brands. This includes an AI video generator called the Symphony Creative Studio, which can generate TikTok-ready videos with just a couple of inputs.

Additionally, Symphony can create clips by pulling from existing content from an advertiser’s account. It comes with an AI assistant that helps advertisers draft and refine scrips as well as provide recommendations on optimizing ad performance. It can also help users understand what’s trending.

While this toolset will be very beneficial for advertisers, organizations must consider the possible ban of the platform. This is due to the bill President Biden signed that would ban TikTok from the U.S. if the ownership isn’t transferred to a non-Chinese company. Many companies, especially small businesses, reach their customers through this platform, so it’ll be interesting to see how companies will fill this gap if the platform is no longer accessible in the U.S.
