In episode 74 of the AI Impact Minute, Aaron Back describes how artificial intelligence (AI) is helping to mitigate mass shootings and other threats in public places.

Highlights

00:27 — The horrific acts of mass shootings have heavily impacted allies and families. Many have stepped up to reduce the frequency of mass shootings from occurring in the future, as well as reduce the severity of the ones that do occur.

01:05 — What does AI have to do with mass shootings? A startup company called Gabriel has developed a unique AI solution to prevent mass shootings from happening. The solution is intended to serve as an augmentation to common post-indecent human responses such as alerting authorities and preventing further access to shooters by locking doors.

02:29 — The solution, which uses AI-powered sensors and smart cameras, as well as panic buttons, has been implemented in about 5,000 buildings across the United States in schools, churches, office buildings, campus facilities, and synagogues. An anonymous donor pledged $1 million to get these systems installed across thousands of buildings.

03:01 — The system uses computer vision-based video analysis to detect early signs of dangerous or aggressive behavior, intruders, weapons, and gunshots. If danger is detected, the system alerts local law enforcement agencies and provides them with live video feeds of the building in real time. It also locks doors to prevent further access for active shooters, and sends out community alerts to keep people informed and prevent the spread of misinformation.

04:08 — The technology that has advanced to be able to create solutions like this reinforces the theme of people plus technology — having technology in place to augment some aspects of responses before, during, and after mass shootings is very powerful.
