Many are hearing about something called “the edge,” but struggling to figure out what it means and why it matters for their business. These topics can be even more confusing for business leaders. So, where do we start to unpack what may be the biggest paradigm shift in computing to happen since the cloud?

In the second episode of the Cutting Edge podcast, I’ll cover Multi-Access Edge Computing, or MEC. What does it mean, and why is there such a thing in the world of 5G? I will also go over the benefits of deploying compute resources and placing workloads at the edge of the mobile wireless network.

Highlights

01:15: In edge computing circles, we are hearing about MEC more often. What does it stand for? Mobile Edge Computing? Multi-Access Edge Computing? I provide the story for this new breed of mobile computing, which promises to help 5G deliver against inflated expectations.

07:30: As 5G networks that are cloud-native continue to roll out, MEC will bring about edge clouds that offer the benefits of localized compute resources. This can make many of 5G’s aspirational use cases possible, including those for critical industrial applications.

09:45: What can we expect of MEC today and in the near future? I go over the state of the technology and the commercial deployments that are bringing about a new model of mobile computing and novel applications. Who knows? One might become the fabled “5G killer app.”
