Highlights

00:07 — This episode is brought to you by the Cloud Wars Expo. This in-person event will be held June 28th to 30th at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California.

00:29 — Although world languages have evolved throughout history, words still have a powerful impact on people in many ways. Now, the root of all languages have some basic fundamental ingredients:

  • Variation
  • Inheritance
  • Selection of time

00:59 — Variation takes the form of words, pronunciations, and grammatical structures—all of which are a result of human invention.

01:11 — Linguistic variation is inherited through learning. Further, individuals with particular traits are more likely to successfully reproduce than others.

01:39 — Words can fade if they’re no longer relevant. Both biological and linguistic evolution can produce major changes as cultures collide and certain demographics move to new locations.

02:03 — There are important areas that need to be addressed when it comes to using artificial intelligence to analyze languages, such as inclusivity, ethics, bias, and more. This creates challenges for those developing models for AI, machine learning, and natural language processing.

02:29 — The entanglement of words and the future of AI can be due to the pervasive nature of social media as well as the growth of technology and accounting for new terms.

03:11 — The constructs of AI should be a continual evolution with a core foundation in transparency, feeding into explainability. It needs to promote the uniqueness of humans, as we are the ones influencing technology.
