Highlights
00:13 — This episode is brought to you by the Cloud Wars Expo. This in-person event will be held June 28th to 30th at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California.
00:35 — As farmers are working hard to provide food across the world, they’re also searching for ways to maximize their land without causing harm to the soil or losing crops.
00:56 — Researchers from the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences are conducting experiments on soil to quantify soil organic carbon.
01:10 — The foundation of the research was built on a collection of 37,500 field records representing soil types across the US. By using light reflections, researchers can use the unique spectral bands to interpret the chemical makeup of the soil. Further, this creates hyperspectral data about the soil composition that is sent to farmers to determine which crops to put in which soil types, during certain times of the year, specific locations, and in varying conditions.
02:05 — Not only does this create long-term impacts on the agriculture industry, but it’s also driving sustainability efforts.
