This episode is brought to you by the Cloud Wars Expo. This in-person event will be held from June 28th to 30th at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California.

Highlights

01:34 — According to a Sentinel study, the number of deepfakes appearing online has grown from nearly 15,000 to more than 145,000 since 2019. Deepfakes have been used for fraud, extortion, and even political propaganda.

02:16 — Deepfakes were once difficult to create, requiring high-end CGI and high-compute resources. Today, online tools can develop deepfakes quickly and easily. Google has begun issuing alerts and warnings against users using its CoLab platform for deepfakes.

02:51 — One German computational linguistics professor compared deepfakes to chlorine. In the right hands, chlorine is a useful cleaning component, but it’s also been used as a chemical weapon. There aren’t any consistent industry-wide ethical practices defining the appropriate uses of machine learning and AI.

04:01 — The use of AI in a democratized way will continue to grow exponentially. The remaining battle is on the ethical use front — the future of AI depends on what we do now.
